A proposal is usually sold to you as a price with no place attached — a rooftop, a postcode, a number. We think that is backwards, because you cannot check a venue you have not been told. So here is the whole list, the real figures, and the awkward parts written down.

Most people arrive with a figure in their head rather than a place, and there is no shame in that — it is the sensible order. It has every spot we price, banded by what the dearest day costs rather than the cheapest, so nothing can move up on you once you name a date.

The four area pages are the same list cut by what you can actually reach on a weekday evening. They are not even — one part of London holds far more of these than the others, and the cheap ones are not spread evenly either. The count and the starting figure are on each link above.

If you know the feeling, start with the setting

A garden, a gallery, a room with a door that shuts, a flat with nobody else in it, or somewhere high up with the city underneath. Those five cover most of what people picture when they picture it, and each has its own page with the whole price of every spot on it.

Three things that are true of the whole list

21 of the 94 are places where other people will be nearby for at least part of it — the public gardens mostly — and every one of those says so beside its price. 13 will not take a booking outside April to September. And where a figure is worked out from a venue’s published rate rather than quoted for your own date, its entry says that too, and we go and confirm it before you pay anything.

All 50 spots we can name, cheapest first

A proposal takes about four hours of the venue: an hour to an hour and a half to set it up, an hour for the moment itself, an hour to clear it away. So the venue figures you’ll see are worked out on a four-hour booking, not on the hour you’re in the room.

We check this price with the venue for your date before you pay anything.

There is no single answer, and anybody who gives you one is guessing at your relationship. The useful question is narrower: indoors or out, alone or among people, and what you are comfortable spending. Answer those three and the list below goes from a hundred places to about five.

Can you propose somewhere in London and actually be alone?

Yes, if you hire the place rather than find it. 73 of the 94 spots we price are yours for the booking, with nobody else in the room. The other 21 are public or semi-private, and they say so. The somewhere private page is the honest version of this question.

Do you have to book a venue to propose?

No. A public garden needs no booking at all for a small set-up carried in by hand and cleared the same day, which is why those are the cheapest thing we do. What you cannot have in one is the place to yourselves, and we would rather say that here than on the day.
