The north of our list is a few clusters rather than an even spread, and the hill is the thing they have in common: several of these are somewhere you climb to, and the climb is the reason. It is also the only part of London on our list where a museum and a free park are a walk apart.

Alexandra Palace — The Rose GardenMuswell Hill / Wood GreenAll in £499A walk up the hill on a clear evening is all you have to sell. The rose garden sits below the palace, enclosed and away from the main lawns — clipped hedges, rose beds and a circular stone fountain — and we dress it with LED candles, which is what the park rules allow. We carry the set-up in and clear it the same day, so there is nothing to give it away beforehand.

Golders Hill Park — The BandstandHampsteadAll in, around £685You suggest a morning walk in Golders Hill Park — which is part of Hampstead Heath rather than a walk away from it. The bandstand in the heart of the park is booked by email with the Heath team rather than online, and only ever in three-hour blocks. The slot is yours but the park is not: it stays open around you the whole time, and it keeps park hours, which is why this one is a daytime plan.

Makiko Harris Studio — Whole SpaceKensal TownAll in £939A studio visit, a friend of a friend who paints. Under the central skylight her framed work hangs on the plastered wall and big canvases lean stacked on their stretchers along another one, and at the kitchen end the table is laid for two, because the whole studio is booked and nobody else is coming.

Queen's Park — The BandstandKensal GreenAll in, around £1,015A Sunday walk in the park, nothing in the diary. The bandstand itself is yours for the session — Grade II listed, its ironwork cast in 1891 — tables and chairs included, though they only ever sell it in three-hour blocks. It does not buy the park: that stays open around you, dog walkers and joggers included, we light it with LED candles because the byelaws rule out real flame, and a backdrop counts as a structure the Corporation has to permit in writing.

The Library is the small private room in Burgh House — painted timber panelling, low ceilings, sash windows, a large red Persian carpet and period furniture round a mirror-framed fireplace, ten chairs at the outside. It is yours until half past ten at night, you can play your own music with no noise limit at all, and you may bring your own wine so long as you pay the corkage.

Freud Museum — Dining RoomHampsteadAll in, from £1,555 to £2,347They think it is dinner in Hampstead. It is Freud's own house on Maresfield Gardens, and the dining room in it — the room where he entertained, still holding the decor and furnishings from the time he lived there — is hired as a private space from five in the evening, seven days a week. Thirty-five people sit down in that room; there will be two of you, and you carry in the food and the wine yourselves, with no corkage to pay.

The Alwyne Castle — ConservatoryHighburyAll in, from £1,049 to £2,424A drink at the pub in Highbury is all you have to say. What is actually booked is the Conservatory and the small private garden that opens off it through its own door, so you can be outside under the string lights and still be a step from cover under the glass roof when the weather turns, and the room is hired apart from the pub rather than being a table in it. Monday to Wednesday that is a £500 minimum spend behind the bar, VAT included.

How to choose between these
Hampstead is the cluster worth planning around
A museum, a period house and a park bandstand within a walk of each other is a rare thing in London, and it means you can pick the weather on the morning rather than the month before. If one of you already walks up there, that is half the story written for you.
The cheap answer here is a park, and a park is public
One of these charges nothing at all for the space, which puts the whole proposal at £499. It is a public park: it stays open, other people will be there, and we set up early and work quickly. That is the whole of what we can promise about it.
Season rules out more here than you would think
Three of the 15 will not take a booking outside April to September, and they are the outdoor ones. If your date is a winter one, the indoor spots on this page — a museum, a gallery, a room — are the whole of the answer.
