East is where the converted buildings are, which makes it the cheapest part of London to have a whole place to yourselves and the hardest to point at a landmark from. If the picture in your head is a big empty room with good light rather than a skyline, this is the page.

A proposal takes about four hours of the venue: an hour to an hour and a half to set it up, an hour for the moment itself, an hour to clear it away. So the venue figures you’ll see are worked out on a four-hour booking, not on the hour you’re in the room.

  Hackney Wick

  All in, around £609

  A studio in Hackney Wick, booked by the hour, is the whole of what they are told. It is a dance studio on Wallis Road, taken as a whole venue and handed over as a blank canvas — mirrors, a PA you can play your own music through, £25 an hour from half past eleven in the morning to half past ten at night — so everything they walk into is ours to build. The one thing it will not do is dinner: no food and no drink of any kind may be brought in, so this is the room and the moment, and you eat afterwards.

  West Ham Park — The Bandstand

  West Ham

  All in £633

  A walk in the park is the whole of what they have been told. You have the bandstand itself for the session, and this is the rare one whose own guidelines say you may decorate it, so long as nothing is nailed or screwed into the wood — their tables and chairs are £24.80 on top if you want them. It is daylight only, the last slot ends at 5.30, there is no amplified music, and the parkland around you stays open to everyone.

  • Daytime only — the last session ends at 5.30pm, so there is no after-dark option. Summer only, and outside the park's own entertainment programme.
  • You may decorate the bandstand, but nothing may be nailed or screwed into the wood. No balloons released, no amplified music, and no chalk on the floor.

  GoBoat

  Canary Wharf

  All in £718

  You told them it was a boat round the docks, nothing more. Canary Wharf is the only GoBoat site that sails after sunset, you drive it yourselves, and the towers come straight up out of the water as the city lights come on. The boat is yours for the slot but the water is not — you are asked to keep moving and stay aboard, and other GoBoats will pass you.

  • Three hours is the longest boat you can book, and it is the only GoBoat that runs after dark. Drinks must come from GoBoat.

  Victoria Park

  All in, around £719

  A drink upstairs at the Victoria in Mile End, they think. Above is the pub's first-floor dining room and cocktail bar — a hidden room of sand-dune pinks, pampas grass and fluttering butterflies, with the open-plan reception bar included — and Sunday to Thursday the whole of it lets privately, day or night, with a server of your own for the evening. That is arranged by email rather than through any booking system; on a Friday or Saturday the room is an ordinary restaurant and you would be sharing it.

  Colour + Sense — Artist Palace Warehouse Loft

  They think you are dropping in on an artist's studio off Dace Road. It is her live-work loft rather than a gallery — her own paintings on the walls, pink aerial silks hanging, one tall warehouse window — and for your booked hours the whole place is yours. No alcohol of any kind is allowed in it, not even a bottle you bring yourself, so the toast has to happen somewhere else.

  Spitalfields City Farm — The Kitchen Garden

  Time it after four, or you do this in front of everyone who came to see the animals. Booked after the farm closes, the kitchen garden is a small paved yard to the two of you, an ivy-covered brick wall at the back, a long picnic bench and terracotta pots down one side, at £60 an hour and arranged in advance because standard hours end at four. A member of farm staff is on site throughout, and we use LED candles rather than anything that has to be signed off.

  • Candles have to be agreed with the farm beforehand — their own rules say nothing may be lit unless a member of staff is there watching it.

  Map Maison — Whole Venue

  Dalston

  All in, from £1,049 to £1,599

  Drinks at a little bar on Kingsland Road, they think. You push the door and there is nobody else in it — the whole room is yours for the evening, the light kept low, the pressed-metal ceiling working away above the two of you. An ordinary table here would put you shoulder to shoulder with a busy room; this is the version that is quiet.

  Bow Arts — Nunnery Gallery

  A quick look at the show in Bow before you eat, is the line — except the gallery shut to the public at four and the room has been yours since five. The exhibition stays up on the walls, which is the point of doing it here, and Bow Arts allow fixings to any gallery wall, which almost no gallery does, so a backdrop can go straight up as long as it suits what is hanging. Evening hire runs five till ten Tuesday to Sunday during an exhibition; take a Monday or Tuesday instead and you have it all day.

  William Morris Gallery — Acanthus Room

  Walthamstow

  A museum trip, they think — a look at the wallpapers. The Acanthus Room is at the top of William Morris's house, in what were the servants' quarters, full of Georgian character: panelled walls and a bay window. You take the evening slot, six until eleven, with the galleries shut below you, and the caterers have to come off the gallery's own recommended list.

  The Solo Kitchen & Bar — Roof Terrace

  All in, from £2,356 to £4,212

  They are expecting dinner somewhere ordinary. This is the rooftop above Bethnal Green — marble-effect tables, jewel-toned velvet, dark metal and glass balustrades, open sky over the lot — and the thing you look straight at from the seats is the clock tower next door. An ordinary table puts you up here inside everybody else's evening; the terrace is only yours alone on exclusive hire, from a £1,500 minimum spend Monday to Thursday.

How to choose between these

The bargain here is space, not scenery

Most of what is here is flats, lofts and warehouse conversions hired whole, which is why East has one of the lowest entry prices of anywhere on our list — around £609 all in — and almost none of the postcard views.

Getting there is part of the choice

Hackney Wick, Bow and Walthamstow are a long way from the City on a Friday evening, and a proposal has a set-up window before you arrive and a clear-up after you leave. If one of you is coming from a desk in town, the hour matters as much as the address does.

Dinner afterwards is the easy part

Every spot on this page is a short walk from somewhere to eat, which is more than can be said for the parks. Book that before the day rather than after the yes — nobody wants to be looking at a phone twenty minutes after the ring comes out.
